This is my first attempt as my own trio LOL. not bad for a dry run at this. I'm ok at drums, but way amateur at keys. I'm learnin' though. :) I'll get better! Anyway, have fun! I sure did!!!

Is there an advantage of using the pentatonic scale? I was taught to think diatonic and modal back in the 70s.
I began playing 4-string bass in 1975 because Black Sabbath was my favorite band, and I wanted to be Geezer. LOL Anyway, Four strings was enough to play most of the metal stuff i loved. But as I got older and gigged less my musical taste began to change to playing more melodic stuff, so in 2012 I bought a six-string ESP bass, tuned it low E to hi F, and learned to two hand tap and never looked back. All I needed was my six-string bass and a looper pedal and I can entertain myself for hours.
Love you❤
@@jodywinward1651 love you too, auntie!!!
Hey! First off, awesome video all around. Your playing is beautiful and very inspiring to me as an amateur bassist. I've been playing bass for about 6ish months now. The only experience I had with playing a musical instrument before was my ukulele that I played on and off for 5ish years. I first picked up the bass at my friends house because everyone wanted to jam a little and I requested to play the MB4 Squier bass my buddy had rotting away in his closet. Ever since then I've been in love with the instrument. We all play together in a band now and have since (which is great because my bandmates are accomplished musicians so I learn a ton very fast). At some point in my first month or so I wanted to find the Hendrix of the bass as Jimi is one of my biggest musical heroes. Naturally, as all aspiring bassists do, I came across Jaco and ever since I've been enamored by his playing and by extension the fretless bass. It's somewhat of an end goal of mine to be skilled enough to truly own the fretless as an instrument, but I digress. I've been in the market for a fretless pretty much ever since but due to the financial limitations of being a university student I've had to be very budget friendly in my selection. I bought my first fretless bass from Harley Benton about 5 hours ago and I can't wait to pick it up and try it out. The model I purchased was the Beatbass FL VS from Harley Benton because I love the Violin bass style and the sound it provides (our band typically plays jazz fusion, blues, classic rock and psychedelic jazz/rock). So! My big question! As a beginner bassist and having never actually played a fretless, how much will the unlined fingerboard of the Beatbass FL VS be a hurdle to my playing? Obviously that's a hard question to answer having never heard my playing, but I'd appreciate any tips, tricks or words of warning you could provide. Thanks a ton for such an informative video as well as such angelic playing!
@@alrightokay1771 thanks for watching! The tape lines to start them playing with your eyes shut will help you on an unlined fretless. Cheers!!
@@dr_bassius Thanks for the tip! Should I be using the tape lines as a tactile guide as well as a visual one?
@@alrightokay1771 idk that you’d really feel the lines per se. Just as a visual at first
I started learning 1 year ago on a 4 string... as I did some classes in one of the courses online and played Yousician and hit some 5 string songs I couldn't play. Searched around.. went down Jazz rabbit hole as well.. and yeah, my Musicman couldn't go there. My new BTB806MS arrived last week.. oh man what a joy!
6 string basses like these wacky $15k boutique basses always look retarded and is self indulging and attention seeking for the person playing them.
Hi! What is your preferred stringspacing for 6 string basses?
17.5mm. I have a student with a Ken smith that’s 19mm. It’s not too bad and I can play it fine. But 17.5 is just right for me.
@@dr_bassius Thank you very much! Necks on your basses look so wide, but surprisingly, it's 17.5mm!
Do you stream? And do you still play D2?
I stream lives on tiktok mostly. Because it’s easiest to find an audience. But I’m going to start getting back into twitch I think.
And yeah I’ll play sometimes. Might try d4
When I started on fretless over 15 years ago I just went full on fretless and just used the sides dots to guide me. It just takes lots of practice and checking and rechecking your intonation against the open strings. and developing muscle memory.
As Billy Sheehan once said "just play whatever you wanna play; it's cool!"
Absolutely.
That song is full of your self!
What does that even mean? My daughter Chloe wrote the melody …
Hello goodsir, would you recommend the Ibanez SRMS806. It's a multiscale 6 string bass that I love the idea of, and just like you did I love jazz and fusion and only have a fender squire
I can’t recommend a multi scale because I don’t play them. But if that inspires you then do it!! Maybe you’ll love it!!! That’s what matters!
The low end on that bass...RIDICULOUS! And the rest of the range has wonderful presence and clarity, too. Love that preamp as well. Wishing you many years of great health and inspired playing!
Thank you!! 🙏
Beautiful intonation and touch...What a pleasure to listen to you!
Thank you!! ☺️
Got me from tik tok rad playing man great tones 🙏🏾🤙🏾
Awesome!! Thanks!!!! 🙏
great tutorial for beginners like myself, thank you so much!
My pleasure!!! Lmk if you have more questions!!
If you already have side dots to show you where the 3rd, 5th and 7th positions etc are, why cover them up and stick tape in exactly the same place? It doesn't seem to give you anything extra.
It helps beginners to play parallel across the strings. Especially if there are more than four. As your gaze moves up and down the finger board, your perception of “parallel” (as in imaginary frets) can change, thus resulting in poor intonation. Hope that helps! 😊
I just traded a Rogue 5 string for a Glarry 6! Needless to say, things going fretless.
At 63 I've been playing bass for 2 years. Needless to say chord symbols were a bit confusing for me, until I found this video. Thanks for shedding light on this subject for a beginner jazz / Gypsy jazz bassist.
Fantastic!!! Glad my invention helped you!!
I really enjoy playing 6 string for chordal and tapping stuff, but it's definitely a learning curve!
Been playing 4s and 5s forever but I’m really wanting to get a 6 lately.
What’s stopping you 😜
Denson! This is brilliant. Sharing it with all my friends
Thanks!!!! 🙏
Hi Great playing can this bass cover many different music styles....I have the Ibanez 2600..i really like it but I am such a fan of the fretless sound i want to to change to fretless,,,I have a pawn shop fretless that I have been fooling with and it was only $200 and i am playing it more than the 2600....so....my other issue is i am used to 4 string basses ...will it very difficult to change to this 5 string...thanks in advance...it looks very cool as well peace brother
I think these basses can do anything. I’ve played jazz, pop, rock and metal and more with my gwb1
And what do you think about going to a 5 string from a 4 string...
@@steveguy1360it’s not as hard as you think. Just remember to be patient with yourself. I started on a 4 then went to SIX! you’ll be ok 😊
@@dr_bassius thanks
Saying Jaco didn’t live long enough to use a 6 is a great point and also Felix like you said using a 6 is a monster player Jaco left us way to soon

Love the passion in the video, I love teaching about harmonics with my students because they are one of the most fun steps to creating fun melodies on the bass!
Since when did you become left handed
It’s that TikTok mirrored default. 😅
Thanks for the recommendation and the beautiful display of ALPERIOUS artwork. I am a member of the family in April 2024. My bass - American JazzBass Delux has this decoration. I am happy. 🤩🎶🎸💯👍
Thanks! His work is so beautiful. Welcome to the family of alperious
Thank you for your useful tips.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Do all his basses sound the same....what are the difference beside price.....thanks
They all sound similar. But the price is in the craftsmanship and location of manufacturing. Gwb1 (1005) is made in Japan by hand, but the electronics are the same in that and the 25th anniversary bass. The gwb35 is cnc in Indonesia with different electronics.
@@dr_bassius Good info
Which Gary Willis bass is that....thanks....what strings do you have on it....thanks
That one is the gwb1. And the strings are Fodera dr
Is the included Bag trash or usable? Thanks for the vid. I think this will be my first fretless
The bag is actually pretty decent. I have a better, more expensive one that I’ll be using. But it’s good in a pinch.
Thanks! Ordered my gwb today :). @@dr_bassius
This 25th also comes standard with roundwound strings? Is there much difference in construction and material quality compared to the GWB-1? great channel by the way..👌 greetings from the Netherlands
It does. The only major difference is in where it was made (Indonesia be japan) and the body is ash not swamp ash. Other than that it’s the same bass. Worth every penny
thanks maestro i have the GWB-1 that's why i ask..😉
@@FvdWSeatbeltI can’t really feel/ hear a difference other than it’s “new” 😊
This 25th also comes standard with roundwound strings? Is there much difference in construction and material quality compared to the GWB-1? great channel by the way..👌 thank you greetings from the Netherlands
I ended up putting half rounds on mine. Gave it more of a fretless/ upright sound.
Is thay from Ali express right? Cuz a fodera on a gigbag? I would spec at least a custom hard case, congratulations anyways 😅 enjoy!
Lmao! I TOLD them to send the gig bag. Ali express… hahahahaha
completely unrelated but when you started playing the Dr. Beat metronome gave me marching band PTSD
Mine also arrived from Sweetwater on the 17th, and I can say, pictures do not do it justice. The silver anniversary edition looks much nicer in person. I got it as an upgrade to my GWB35, which I can also recommend. I never got to take lessons from Gary, but I can certainly appreciate his basses!
For unlined fretless, should we refer to the dots when we practice? Or train ourselves all muscle memory such that we never need to look at the neck at all? I understand that should all use our ears but it is already after the fact that we played a detuned note and then adjust it afterwards and that's different from spot on notes. I have only a lined version and I found myself relying on the lines so much. It is just a habit I can't get away with, and thinking of getting an unlined one.
Set up a drone pitch. I use cello drones here on UA-cam. Search. Then play scales etc with your eyes shut. Listen and feel the scales. Patterns etc. visualize your hands in your mind.
Beautiful. Enjoy!
Great playing man, very Jaco-esque. Sic azz music room.
Thanks!!! I love my bassment 😜
I play 5 strings bass mostly, but I have a Ibanez BTB676 that I love to play and explore new possibilities. Once you get comfortable with it, it's really good.
you've convinced me to get one. it sounds fantastic. love the silverburst(?) finish!
Hi, have fun with new bass
Outstanding
Love that last groove and it's great enjoy
I like the simple controls, looks comfortable too
Yoooo cool outro
Thanks lol
I just ordered one today and your video just popped up! It sounds so good!
Awesome!! Congrats!
My favorite is still the traditional sunburst, but that grey and black definitely makes a statement
